How to Check Eligibility for an On-Grid Solar Power Plant

To determine your eligibility for installing an on-grid solar power plant in Kerala, consider the following key factors:

  1. Existing KSEB Connection: You must have an active Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) connection, as on-grid systems are integrated directly with the state’s power grid.

  2. Available Rooftop Space: Ensure you have sufficient shadow-free rooftop area. Typically, 1 kW of solar panels requires about 100 square feet. For example, a 3 kW system would need approximately 300 square feet.

  3. Connection Phase and Capacity Limits:

    • Single-Phase Connections: Eligible for installations ranging from 1 kW to 5 kW.
    • Three-Phase Connections: Can accommodate systems up to 100 kW.
    • 11 kV Connections: Suitable for installations up to 1 MW.
  4. KSEB Approvals:

    • Feasibility Certificate: Submit an application to your local KSEB electrical section with a fee of ₹1,000. KSEB will assess the capacity of the local transformer and issue a feasibility certificate within 15 days if the infrastructure can support your proposed system.
    • Registration: After obtaining the feasibility certificate, register your project with KSEB by paying ₹1,000 per kW. The registration is valid for six months, within which the installation should be completed.
  5. Net Metering: KSEB provides net metering to monitor both the electricity consumed and the excess power exported back to the grid. This system allows you to offset your electricity bills and potentially earn for surplus energy supplied.

  6. Government Subsidy:

The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG) aims to install rooftop solar for 1 crore households, providing up to 300 units of free electricity per month. With a ₹75,021 crore budget, the scheme offers direct bank subsidies and concessional loans. A maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 is available for solar systems from 3 kW – 10kW, making it an affordable and eco-friendly solution.

Why On-grid solar is necessary in todays world?

On-grid solar power is essential today due to rising electricity costs, increasing energy demand, and the urgent need for sustainable solutions. It reduces dependency on fossil fuels, lowers electricity bills, and allows users to earn through net metering by feeding excess power back to the grid. With minimal maintenance and government subsidies available, it’s a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice. As the world moves toward renewable energy, adopting on-grid solar ensures energy security, financial savings, and a cleaner future.

How an On-Grid Solar Power Plant Works

Solar Panels Generate Power – Photovoltaic (PV) panels convert sunlight into electricity (DC).
Inverter Converts Power – A solar inverter changes DC into usable AC electricity.
Power is Used & Shared – Electricity is consumed in real-time, and excess power is sent to the grid.
Net Metering Tracks Energy – The bidirectional meter records both consumed and exported electricity, adjusting bills accordingly.
